The Purpose of Treaty Education
The main purpose of Treaty Education is to increase the knowledge and understanding of the Treaties and the Treaty Relationship among all students. Secondly, ensure students understand the impact of the Treaties and the Treaty Relationship on the creation of Saskatchewan and Canada. Finally, to build bridges between all Canadians, in order to strengthen our society and our prosperity as a country. The Importance of Treaties As Canadians, we have an obligation to these treaties this includes making a promise to dutifully observe the laws of Canada, including treaties with Indigenous peoples. The phrase we are all treaty people, to me means that everyone in Canada whether they were born here or not are in some way affected by treaties either positively or negatively. Treaty Education In My Classroom The journey of understanding the treaty relationship and one’s role within it can be a collaborative journey between me the teacher and my students. As a future educator it is very important that I incorporate Treaty Education into my classroom on a daily basis so that my students will Also, so that they will understand all aspects of Canada’s history with its Indigenous people both positive and negative aspects. In addition, incorporating indigenous ways of knowing into the classroom allows for a shift in student minds from dominant ideas to ideas that are individual and are based on what one deems moral and culturally instead of basing things the way society wants to. We Are All Treaty People The phrase we are all treaty people, means that everyone in Canada whether they were born here or not are in some way affected by treaties either positively or negatively. Treaty lands cover more land then most people would think and therefore a large number of people live on treaty land regardless of whether or not their ancestors were involved in treaty negotiations or the signing of treaties.
