ECS Field Reflections After 3 Weeks
1. The strategy that I have been using to connect with students has been encouraging them when they do good things. This makes them smile and gets them interested in me and gives them a chance to ask questions. It also makes them happy to see me being nice to them and then they want to be nice to me. Also, I have been eavesdropping on their conversations and then joining in, which makes me seem approachable, friendly, and someone who wants to get to know them. Another thing I have noticed is that being open and honest with them goes a long way with them in terms of developing relationships. 2. The biggest challenge that I have faced in the field so far is trying not to be too nice so that the students will take me seriously. However I think that once I get more used to being in their classroom and teaching them and starting to understand how they learn best, that things will get better. While I know that I could be a little stricter that some kids do not always appreciate having a very strict teacher. Also, being more confident in my ability to teach and speak more confidently and loudly. This is something that I tried to improve on for my third and first individual lesson and since it took place in the gym I had to be louder and both my partner and co-op teacher said my voice level was perfect for being in a gym. 3. Something that I have taken from the New Teacher Book and applied in the field is to build up their confidence in their intelligence and creativity from 12 Suggestions for a New Teacher. I am attempting to apply this by being very encouraging towards them when they get an answer right or come and show me something they have done which happens multiple times everyday. This is something that has also helped with connecting with them, as they love to get compliments about their work. But based on what I have read so far in the book, I think that I will be able to apply many things into my future classrooms. ECS Field Reflections After 7 Weeks 1. In terms of connecting and developing relationships with students that has actually gone very smooth. The amount of hugs that have have received tells me that I must be doing something right, and that they enjoy having me in their classroom. I think I have especially formed connections with the students who struggle academically but are really good, fun kids to be around. Talking with grade ones is actually very fun as they often have a lot of different and unique interests, but at the same time, they often do not know a lot and it is very easy to blow their minds by sharing a fact or something cool. They are also always willing to talk about absolutely anything regardless of whether or not they are supposed to be talking or not. 2. Something that I still need to work on in my teaching development is managing time during my lessons. I often forget that grade ones are very young and need a decent amount of time to transition and get ready for the next part of the day. However like my co-operating has told me time management is something that takes a lot of practice to figure and that the more I teach the better I will get at it. However something I am proud of in my teaching development is that I am already able to write big enough and clear enough on the whiteboard. This is something that I was worried about as I do not have the best handwriting and I had heard that whiteboard writing can take time to develop. But it seems like I have figured it out already. 3. Something that I have taken from the New Teacher Book and applied in my classroom is to keep lecturing short from 12 Suggestions for a New Teacher. Grade one students are not able to sit still and quiet for very long. And if they have to they will just start moving and talking which can derail a lesson very quickly. I have learned to not talk for long and have them be working when in the classroom or moving around when in the gym. This allows them to themselves and also focus and not have to worry about having to sit still and silent. Also, since I am not talking for very long I am able to be circulating the room and giving one on one help to students who need help.
